There are four possible search options within the Virtual Tick Museum
- by scientific name of tick species using the drop down list
- by entering the scientific name of the host
- by country
- by tick collection
It is currently not possible to search by a combination of strings e.g. by a certain tick and host species.
ad 1.) The names of species that can be found on this list are all taken from the ‘World list of valid tick names’ published in 2002 by Ivan G. Horak, Jean-Louis Camicas and James E. Keirans 1 and are listed in TicksBase as having an ‘Accepted’ or ‘Provisionally Accepted’ namestatus. A summary of all records for the species of choice will be shown once the search command is given.
ad 2.) When this option is used, a summary of all records containing the entered scientific host name will be shown. The host names used in the VTM have all been checked for their nomenclatural validity at the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) portal at www.gbif.org
ad 3.) A summary of all collection records for the country of choice will appear on screen when this search is performed.
ad 4.) All records from the selected collection will be shown when this option is used.
